Bryophyte Excursion at Freiburg in Germany
For members of the Nordic Bryological Society (NBS) and guests

Freiburg is an old University city with about 200.000 inhabitants, of which 10 % are students. The surroundings of the city have a very high diversity in geology, climate and vegetation. Freiburg has a difference in altitude of more than 1000 m within the city border, and within a circle of 20 km you have mediterrane vegetation on loess soil at Kaiserstuhl and Tuniberg, but also subalpine vegetation on the peak of Schauinsland. We will start the excursion at Kaiserstuhl and Tuniberg. We stay at a very nice hotel in Bötzingen at Kaiserstuhl with single or double rooms. This house is famous for its first class meals. After three days we will move to Schauinsland and the Uni-House. This is a seminar-house of the University, an old typical wooden house of the Schwarzwald. There are rooms with 12-14 beds and simpler food. From there we make excursion to different Schwarzwald places. All excursion are very close to the place where we stay, so the car trips are short. The longest drive is to Istein at river Rhein, which is about 45 km away.
The bryoflora of the area is very rich - there has been found about 800 species in the region. But we will not only look for bryophytes, we also have some culture programs like wine tasting at Kaiserstuhl, sightseeing in the city of Freiburg and a visit to a deep tunnel of an old silver mine.

Sa. 17. April:	Travelling day, arriving at hotel Krone in Bötzingen at the Kaiserstuhl. Welcome dinner, introduction to the excursions
So. 18. April:	Loess vegetation at Bötzingen, Kaiserstuhl (Dicranella howei, Didymodon cordatus, Pottia bryoides, Pterygoneurum ovatum, Tortula vahliana, Tortula brevissima, Sphaerocarpus michelii...). After dinner wine tasting at the wine grower cooperation of the village. Tortula vahliana
Mo. 19. April:	Loess vegetation at Kaiserstuhl and Tuniberg (Acaulon triquetrum, Crossidium crassinerve, Phascum curvicolle, Pleurochaete squarrosa, Pterygoneurum lamellatum, Pterygoneurum subsessile, Tortula atrovirens, . Epiphytes in the Mooswald near Freiburg (Dicranum viride). Pterygoneurum subsessile
Di. 20. April:	Limestone rocks in the river Rhein at Isteiner Schwellen with Bryum gemmiparum, Cinclidotus danubicus, Cinclidotus riparius, Dialytrichia mucronata, Didymodon nicholsonii... Limestone rocks at Isteiner Klotz with Grimmia tergestina... Münstertal in Schwarzwald (Black Forest), old mining area with Ptychomitrium polyphyllum…. Do. 22. April:	Tennenbach with sandstone vegetation in a very humid area (Sematophyllum demissum, Metzgeria simplex, Campylostelium saxicola, Brachydontium trichodes, Tetrodontium brownianum…) Visit to the town Freiburg. Sightseeing, culture and German beer. Campylostelium saxicola
Fr. 23. April:	St. Wilhelm, humid and dry forests with rocks and boulder slopes (Buxbaumia viride, Andreaea rothii, Ulota coarctata, Tetrodontium ovatum, Polytrichum pallidisdetum). Sa. 24. April:	Travelling home. Transfer to train station in Freiburg.

The costs:
	3 nights at Hotel Krone, Bötzingen, single or double rooms. Inclusive breakfast and 3 course menu at dinner.	150 Euro
	4 nights in Uni-house on Schauinsland, rooms with 12-14 beds, inclusive breakfast, lunch packet and dinner.	80 Euro
	Travel costs on excursions: we rent cars and the costs depend on how many persons participating. About, or less	100 Euro

	Visit to silver mine	12 Euro

The number of participants is limited to 20 persons.
If there are less than 20 persons signing in from the NBS, guests are welcome. You can register early in advance on a waiting list.
The registration is valid after sending a registration fee of 50 Euro to me.
This registration fee will be settled and adjusted once the travelling costs on the excursion are known. You will obtain my address or bank information after your email registration.
Please send me a short email early , if you are interested to come to this excursion, which makes it more easy for me to plan.
Also, it could be a good idea to register early, if you already know that you plan to come.
If there are more than 20 participants, first come, first served.

Travelling:
The hotel Krone in Bötzingen could easily be reached by train. At the end of the excursion, we bring you to the train station in Freiburg.
To reach Germany you can look for a cheap flight to Frankfurt Main (most flights), Frankfurt Hahn (cheapest flights) or Basel (closest to Freiburg).
